According to a report on Cricbuzz, the threat comes from pro-Islamic State (IS) media sources inciting violence against sporting events. Supporters have been urged to join the battlefield in their countries.
Despite the threat, Cricket West Indies (CWI) CEO Jonny Graves reassured the public about safety measures in place for the event. Graves stated that CWI works closely with authorities in host countries and continuously monitors global events to ensure appropriate security plans are in place. The safety and security of everyone involved in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is their top priority, and they have a comprehensive plan in place.
Reports of potential threats have also appeared in the Caribbean media. Trinidad Prime Minister Keith Rowley discussed security agencies’ plans to address any threats to matches, while regional security officials in Barbados are monitoring potential threats to the tournament. Intelligence of a potential threat has been received through Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) via the media group ‘Nashir Pakistan.’
The T20 World Cup matches are scheduled to be held in several Caribbean islands, including Barbados, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, St Vincent, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. Despite the threats, efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of all involved in the tournament.
