Arlington science educator nominated for prestigious White House recognition

Arlington’s Barrett Elementary School science/STEM teacher Laurie Sullivan has been named as one of the finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This award, considered the top honor for K-12 teachers working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, recognizes educators who have made outstanding contributions to their students’ learning.

Along with Sullivan, two other educators from Virginia were named finalists for the award. One is from Goochland County, and the other is from Martinsville. These finalists were selected by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons expressed pride in recognizing and honoring these three Virginia teachers who have been chosen as finalists. She stated that they will represent the commonwealth in the national selection process conducted by the White House.

The national selection committee will now review the applications of these 2024 state finalists, and the winners of the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching will be announced by the White House.
