The Dark Side of Personal Tracking: Balancing Safety and Surveillance

Can Humans Use GPS Tracking Devices? – Technological Advancements

I had an unpleasant experience today when I got a flat tire on my bike while riding home from work. This caused me to be late for a dinner date with my wife, making me consider the possibility of using a tracking device to help her monitor my location and speed of travel at all times. If she had access to this technology, she would have been able to see that I was traveling at a slow walking pace quite far away from our home.

During a conversation with a hair stylist, she shared how she uses her children’s cellphones to keep track of their geographic locations. This made me wonder if there was a way to achieve similar tracking capabilities without the need for a cell phone. As I pondered over this question, I recalled that some convicted criminals are required to wear GPS tracking devices as part of their sentencing conditions. This led me to think about whether it would be feasible to use similar tracking technology for personal purposes without relying on a cell phone.

As an alternative, I considered carrying around one of these devices as an alternative to carrying around my cellphone if I wanted to avoid using it altogether. However, in response to the suggestion of using my cellphone for tracking purposes, I contemplated over the possibility of simply bringing it with me instead.

Overall, the idea of using tracking technology raises concerns about privacy and surveillance, particularly when it comes to monitoring individuals’ movements without their consent. While there may be some benefits in terms of safety and security, it is important to carefully consider these issues before adopting such technology for personal use.
