The Economic and Social Power of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages: A Deloitte Study

Tourism is on the rise in Italy’s most stunning villages

The Italian economy receives a significant boost from the most beautiful villages in the country, which attract over 9 million visitors each year. In 2022, these villages welcomed approximately 8.8 million visitors, resulting in around 21.5 million overnight stays. Over 37% of the visitors were international, while 32% were day visitors. The direct spending by tourists in Italy from these villages is estimated at about 4.6 billion euros, with an additional indirect and induced expenditure of over 9 billion euros. This results in a total overall expenditure of approximately 13.8 billion euros in Italy.

A Deloitte study revealed that tourism supports over 90,000 jobs and generates positive tax revenues amounting to more than 2.3 billion euros in these villages. The sectors benefiting most from this tourism are accommodation and catering, commerce, and transport.
