The End of the Vaxzevria Era: AstraZeneca to Withdraw Popular Covid-19 Vaccine from Market Due to Low Demand”.

AstraZeneca pulls out Covid-19 vaccine due to lack of interest

In June 2021, a healthcare worker prepares doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine at a vaccine hub in the Auditorium della Tecnica in Rome. The vaccine, called Vaxzevria and developed with the University of Oxford, has been a prominent Covid-19 vaccine globally, with over 3 billion doses administered since January 4, 2021.

However, despite its success, the vaccine has not generated revenue for AstraZeneca since April 2023. This prompted the company to withdraw Vaxzevria from the market due to a decline in demand with the availability of new Covid-19 shots. The European Medicines Agency also announced the withdrawal of Vaxzevria from the market in European Union countries.

AstraZeneca stated that they would work with regulators in other countries to align on a clear path forward and withdraw marketing authorizations for Vaxzevria where no future commercial demand is expected. The company expressed pride in Vaxzevria’s role in combating the global pandemic and its recognition by governments worldwide. As this is a developing story, updates will be provided when available.
