The Lions’ Road to Redemption: Finding the Missing Pieces for a Playoff Run

Lions on the Cusp of Super Bowl Contention, Need to Fill Key Gaps in NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions had a successful 2023 season, finishing with a record of 12-5 and winning the NFC North division. However, their season came to an end in the NFC championship game. As they head into the NFL Draft, they have draft picks in each round, with their first pick coming at No. 29.

The Lions’ top needs heading into the draft are a secondary pass rusher, interior offensive lineman, kicker, and wide receiver. While they have addressed some defensive needs in free agency, they are looking to strengthen their roster further through the draft, particularly at the kicker position.

In the first round, the Lions could target Chop Robinson, an edge rusher from Penn State. On Day 2, they may look at players like Keon Coleman, a wide receiver from Florida State, and Dominick Puni, an offensive lineman from Kansas to fill their needs.

The Lions received a low grade initially in their last draft but proved critics wrong with their selections. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs made immediate impacts as a rookie and was named Rookie of the Year for his outstanding performance on offense. Linebacker Jack Campbell also contributed significantly to their defense and was named second-team All-Rookie in 2023. Tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch also made immediate impacts as rookies and were integral parts of their team’s success.

Looking ahead to the upcoming draft
