The Unbreakable Bond of the Schappell Twins: A Tribute to Their Lives and Legacy

Berks natives and the world’s oldest conjoined twins have died

Lori and George Schappell, the world’s oldest living conjoined twins, have passed away at the age of 62. The cause of their death was not disclosed, but their unique bond and determination to live independent lives have inspired millions around the world.

The Schappell twins were craniopagus conjoined twins, a rare condition that occurs in only 2% to 6% of cases. Despite their challenges, they pursued their passions and maintained their own residences since the age of 24. They also enjoyed traveling and received widespread attention throughout their lives, appearing on documentaries, talk shows, and even a television show called “Nip/Tuck.”

In recent years, Dori came out as transgender and began identifying as George. George was an accomplished country music singer who performed across the U.S., while Lori excelled as a trophy-winning bowler and worked at Reading Hospital’s laundry for several years. Together, they led extraordinary lives that defied the odds and inspired many with their unwavering determination to live on their terms.
