The Yankees’ Chance on Right-Handed Reliever Michael Tonkin: Overcoming Struggles and Making a Playoff Run

The Yankees have claimed right-handed reliever Michael Tonkin off waivers from the Mets, marking his third time with the team this season. Tonkin’s journey has been tumultuous, starting with his time on the Mets before being designated for assignment and traded to the Minnesota Twins. However, after just one appearance with the Twins, he was once again DFA’d and ended up back with the Mets. Unfortunately, Tonkin only made two appearances with the Mets before being DFA’d for the third time this season.

The 34-year-old reliever has struggled this season, posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 9.0 innings over six appearances for both the Mets and Twins. Despite his struggles, the Yankees have decided to take a chance on Tonkin and have added him to their 40-man roster. In order to make room for Tonkin, the Yankees have designated right-handed pitcher McKinley Moore for assignment.

Tonkin will now have the opportunity to contribute to the Yankees bullpen and prove his worth at the major league level once again. He will join a team that is currently leading their division and hoping to make it to postseason play. It remains to be seen if Tonkin can turn things around and become a valuable asset to the team, but he will certainly be given every opportunity to do so by his new home in New York City.
