TikTok has launched its Global Youth Council, a new initiative aimed at promoting the safety and well-being of teenagers on the social media platform. The program brings together 15 users aged between 15 and 18 from various countries to provide insights on inclusion and well-being.

The social network, owned by ByteDance, already offers several tools to protect minor users and ensure their safety, such as the Family Synchronization feature. TikTok aims to enhance security within the application, creating a safe space where young people can freely express themselves.

The company announced plans to establish a Global Youth Council back in 2023 with the aim of listening to the experiences of young users. The council now consists of 15 teenagers from different countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Morocco. These representatives come from various communities and are dedicated to defending young creators’ interests.

During their second meeting held recently, members of the Youth Council outlined their priorities for the year. They focused on improving the well-being and inclusion of young people by redesigning the TikTok Youth Portal and gaining more insight into complaints and account blocking processes.

TikTok has conducted a global study in partnership with ConnectSafely involving over 12,000 adolescents and their guardians demonstrating its commitment to listening to external perspectives in enhancing safety measures on TikTok. The company emphasizes that external perspectives play an essential role in implementing effective safety measures on TikTok.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote safety on its platform, TikTok is launching new media literacy campaigns in the United States aimed at countering misinformation and AI-generated content. These campaigns will help young people develop critical thinking skills that will enable them to navigate digital content safely.

Overall, TikTok’s Global Youth Council is a unique initiative that brings together young people from different countries to provide insights on inclusion and well-being on its platform. It underscores TikTok’s commitment to creating a safe space where young people can freely express themselves while promoting their overall well-being.
