Total Solar Eclipse at Catawba Science Center: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience!

Special Hours & Activities to Celebrate Solar Eclipse at Catawba Science Center

Join us on April 8th at the Catawba Science Center from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM for a special Solar Eclipse Event where the sun and the moon will meet! This free event is open to everyone and offers plenty of fun-filled activities on the lawn.

During this upcoming Solar Eclipse, which will be the last Total Solar Eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044, guests can explore the planetarium/aquarium building for a reduced admission price of $5 per person, with members getting in for free.

The Solar Eclipse will begin at 1:53 PM with the first contact, as the Moon starts to overlap the edge of the Sun, creating a crescent shape. At 3:11 PM, it will reach its maximum point known as totality, where the Moon covers the entire surface of the Sun. During this phase, you may notice the sky darkening, a drop in temperature, and eerie silence. Shadow Bands and Baily’s Beads may also be visible.

As time progresses, guests can observe how it moves away from the sun until it makes its third contact at 4:26 PM when a diamond ring and crescent shape reappear. The fourth contact marks its final stage as it completely moves across the face of the Sun.
