Tragic Accident at Sri Lanka’s Army-Hosted Motorsport Event Kills Seven, Injures 21

Car crashes into crowd at Sri Lanka motor race, killing 7

A race car ploughed into spectators at a motorsport event hosted by Sri Lanka’s army, killing at least seven people and injuring another 21. The incident occurred at the Fox Hill circuit, which is maintained by the Sri Lankan army. The video of the crash was widely shared on social media, showing track marshals frantically waving yellow flags to signal other drivers to slow down. However, the drivers continued to speed past in clouds of orange dust until a red car slammed into the spectators, causing chaos and screams.

Among the deceased was an eight-year-old girl. The army chief, Vikum Liyanage, had opened the gates to spectators free of charge to promote motorsports at the event. Unfortunately, this decision ultimately led to a tragic accident that serves as a reminder of the risks associated with motorsport events and the importance of safety precautions. Liyanage claimed that approximately 100,000 spectators were present at the Fox Hill circuit, which is located around 180 kilometers east of Colombo. Despite this somber incident, Liyanage remains committed to promoting safe and responsible motorsports in Sri Lanka.
