Tragic Boat Accident on Tien River Highlights the Need for Improved Safety Measures in Maritime Transportation

The most severely injured victim of a cruise ship collision suffered from ‘organ fractures and severed limbs’

On April 19, a boat carrying 42 foreign guests collided with a ferry on the Tien River in Tan Chau town, An Giang. The accident resulted in severe injuries for a 36-year-old male tour guide, who suffered a severed elbow and multiple broken bones. Despite efforts from a team of specialists at Cho Ray Hospital, the patient’s arm could not be saved.

Several passengers, including German and French tourists, also sustained injuries and were treated at FV Hospital. The ship owner attributed the accident to poor visibility caused by barges carrying sand in the area. However, both the ship’s crew and the ferry driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in maritime transportation to prevent similar accidents in the future. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, but it is clear that precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of all passengers involved in maritime activities.
