Trump’s Tug-of-War with Donors: Can He Close the Fundraising Gap for 2024?

Trump’s Top 2020 Donor is Still Disinclined to Support in 2024

President Donald Trump has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018, but now he is focused on securing funds from his past mega-donors for his 2024 presidential campaign. While he has likely clinched the Republican Party’s nomination, some of his largest donors have proven to be more difficult to persuade, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

One major concern for Trump’s campaign is that some key donors have expressed reservations due to his legal issues, prompting them to focus their financial resources on congressional races instead. Despite meeting with him on multiple occasions, Miriam Adelson, who was a major contributor with her now-deceased husband in 2020, has yet to commit to financially supporting Trump’s campaign. The timing and amount of her potential contribution remain uncertain.

President Joe Biden and the Democrats continue to raise funds at a steady pace, leaving Trump facing a significant financial gap. March campaign financial reports showed that Biden raised over $90 million compared to Trump’s $65 million, leaving Biden with nearly $100 million more in campaign funds at the start of April. Additionally, Trump is facing mounting legal bills that require attention.

Despite these challenges, Trump’s loyal donors are stepping up to support him. For example, hotelier Robert Bigelow contributed $1 million towards Trump’s legal expenses and $20 million to his campaign, indicating ongoing support from his base. With the campaign season heating up, Trump will need to rally his donors to match Biden’s fundraising efforts and secure the necessary resources for a successful run in 2024.
