Ukraine’s Science Sector Suffers Devastating Impact of Conflict: Call for Urgent Emergency Recovery Plan

The Influence of War on Ukrainian Scientific Progress

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, the country’s scientific institutions have been severely impacted. Over one-third of them have been damaged or destroyed, leaving many researchers and university teachers displaced. Tragically, several scientists have lost their lives as a result of the conflict.

One of the main consequences of this devastation has been a significant reduction in funding for scientific work in Ukraine. This has led to cuts in staff salaries, part-time work, and even suspensions of employment. As a result, productivity within the scientific community has suffered greatly.

In an effort to better understand the damage caused by the war and its consequences on Ukraine’s science sector, UNESCO commissioned a study from the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The findings of this study were released in March 2024 and highlighted the urgent need for an emergency recovery plan for Ukraine’s public science sector.

The report revealed that many scientists had fled their homes due to the conflict, with one in three now working remotely. This has had a negative impact on collaboration and research opportunities within the scientific community. Additionally, many institutions have struggled to maintain their infrastructure and resources due to budget cuts and damage sustained during the war.

Despite these challenges, there are still many scientists working tirelessly to rebuild and recover from this devastating conflict. Their work is critical for ensuring that Ukraine’s scientific institutions can continue to thrive and contribute to progress within their field.

The Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is calling for immediate action from governments and international organizations to support Ukrainian science researcher
