United Nations Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Strip During Ramadan, Marking a Historic First for the Council

UN Security Council Passes Resolution Urging “Immediate” Ceasefire in Gaza

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan. The resolution was backed by Algeria and nine other non-permanent member countries.

The approval of this resolution came after Israel’s military offensive on the Palestinian enclave resulted in over 32,000 deaths. UN Secretary General António Guterres announced the approval of the resolution on social media, emphasizing the need to end violence and secure hostage releases.

The text of the resolution demanded an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan, leading to permanent and sustainable peace in the region. It also called for the release of all hostages held by Hamas and guaranteed humanitarian access to address medical needs in Gaza. This action underscored the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring aid delivery to Palestine.

This resolution marked a first for the Council as it specifically addressed a ceasefire in Gaza. It highlighted that international law should be followed to protect civilians from harm. Despite political tensions and implications, this action finally brought some relief to those affected by ongoing crisis in Gaza.
