Remembering through Football: Using Sports to Reflect on History

The group’s visit to Israel was organized by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) in partnership with the German Football League (DFL), showcasing the global sports community’s collaborative efforts to combat anti-Semitism and promote remembrance and education. During their stay, they met with the Hostage and Missing Families Forum in Tel Aviv and participated in an evening rally in the Hostage Square. They also visited Kibbutz Kfar Gaza in the south of the country, where they were hosted by the family of Neta Epstein, a beloved member of the local Kfar Gaza Foxes group who was tragically killed during the Hamas attack.

The delegation from the German Football League and the World Jewish Congress participated in Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem, which is especially meaningful given the current rise in anti-Semitism around the world. By honoring the victims of the Holocaust and standing against hate, they underscore their commitment to fighting anti-Semitism and promoting tolerance.

In addition to their visit to Israel, the World Jewish Congress has announced two additional sports-related initiatives in connection with the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. The “Football and Remembrance” initiative will engage Euro 2024 participants with the history of the Holocaust through visits to local memorials and former concentration camps, while the “Soccer and Memory” project will use sports as a gateway to historical remembrance, emphasizing the connection between sports, history, and memory.

From May 23 through July, a public exhibition titled “Sports. Audiences. Power.” will be hosted by
