Uniting Against Property Crimes: Albany Business Owners Call for Community Action

The Albany Police Department (APD) is calling on business owners to unite in the face of an increase in property crimes affecting their establishments in Albany. In 2024 alone, 21 different businesses have been burglarized, with a recent incident at the Dollar General on Radium Springs Road involving a smash-and-grab where the suspect broke in and stole chips and drinks, leaving behind significant damage.

Customers like Bertha Thomas expressed their dismay over the incident, while business owners like Sudha Patel of Quick Buys Food Stores are left to deal with the repairs and financial losses. Patel mentioned that they have been targeted twice in the past three months. In 2023, there were 102 burglaries and 30 robberies reported in Albany.

Lt. Jon Segroves, supervisor of the Albany police property crime unit, discussed the efforts being made to combat the rising crime trend, including the use of resources like the FUSUS system. He also emphasized the importance of business owners taking preventative measures to protect their establishments. Segroves highlighted the need to make businesses less desirable targets for criminals to help minimize the damage caused by these incidents.

Business owners are encouraged to implement security measures to deter criminals and protect their properties. By remaining vigilant and taking proactive steps, businesses can help reduce their vulnerability to property crimes. To report news tips or errors, readers are encouraged to contact the news outlet.
