New study reveals Northwest Michigan’s outdoor recreation economy brought in $1.15 billion in 2022

In 2022, Northwest Michigan’s outdoor economy contributed $1.15 billion to the region’s Gross Regional Product, highlighting its significance as a major economic driver in the area. The recently released study shows that the outdoor industry employed 4,712 workers and had a significant impact on the regional economy.

The study found that Northwest Michigan has a higher concentration of agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting employment compared to national averages for regions of similar size. Additionally, residents in the region spend 32 percent more on boats, trailers, campers, and recreational vehicles than the national average.

Stacie Bytwork, President of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce and Networks Northwest board member, emphasized the importance of understanding the region’s unique recreational assets to identify opportunities for growth and make Northwest Michigan stand out as a destination of choice. The Outdoor Recreation Economic Impact Study for Northwest Michigan was a collaborative effort between several organizations including Networks Northwest, Alliance for Economic Success, Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, and Traverse Connect.

The study recommends further investment and development opportunities in camping and camping equipment, bicycles, sports equipment rental and repair services among others.
