US Lawmakers Warn Biden Admin on China’s Potential Dominance in RISC-V Tech and National Security Implications

US Reviewing Risks of China’s Utilization of Open-Source RISC-V Chip Technology in Tech Warfare

In November, a group of 18 US lawmakers from both houses of Congress raised concerns with the Biden administration about China’s potential dominance in RISC-V technology and how it could impact US national and economic security. The lawmakers wanted to know what plans the administration had in place to prevent this scenario from unfolding.

In response to the inquiry, the Commerce Department stated that they are currently evaluating the potential risks associated with China’s advancement in RISC-V technology. They are also assessing whether there are any actions that can be taken under Commerce authorities to address these concerns effectively. However, the Commerce Department acknowledged the need to approach this issue cautiously in order to avoid unintentionally harming US companies that are collaborating on RISC-V technology as part of international groups. They recognize the importance of striking a balance between protecting national security interests and supporting the innovation and competitiveness of US companies in the global marketplace.
