Volkswagen Targeted by Hackers: Thousands of Files Stolen over Decade

Thousands of files stolen in long-term VW hack

Volkswagen, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, has recently been targeted by hackers who allegedly stole thousands of files related to various aspects of their business. The company confirmed this information on Saturday, though they declined to provide further details when asked. According to media reports, the incident took place around ten years ago and was recently brought to light by Spiegel and ZDF, citing internal VW documents about the cyber attacks.

The attackers were believed to be focused on stealing information related to petrol engine development, transmission development, dual clutch transmission, and alternative drive technologies such as electromobility and fuel cells. It is estimated that up to 19,000 files were taken between 2010 and 2014 or 2015. In response to suspected connections to China, the Chinese embassy in Berlin condemned any form of cyber espionage.

Volkswagen has emphasized the importance of digital security in protecting their systems, processes, and products both in the past and present. A spokesperson stated that they are continuously working to ensure the security and functionality of their IT landscape, products, and digital ecosystems. This includes adopting new technological solutions and maintaining open communication with partners, associations, and authorities.
