Walking Together Along the Kokoda Trail: A Tale of Unity and Friendship between Australia and Papua New Guinea

The Australian Prime Minister trekked 15 km to visit World War II battlefields.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined hands on April 23 to participate in traditional welcoming ceremonies with local residents in the village of Kokoda. The two leaders then embarked on a 15 km walk along the Kokoda trail to the war memorial site in Isurava town, where they planned to commemorate Anzac Day on April 25.

The location of this significant battle between US and Australian troops and Japanese forces during World War II was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by both countries. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the importance of walking side by side along the trail to symbolize the strong relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

In December 2023, Australia and Papua New Guinea signed a defense agreement aimed at strengthening their ties. However, Prime Minister Marape clarified that this agreement did not align Papua New Guinea with Australia and the US in their strategic competitions with China. He assured Prime Minister Albanese that their partnership remained strong.

The joint journey along the Kokoda trail was seen as a symbolic gesture of the close relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea. Both leaders emphasized the importance of moving forward together in peace and solidarity. Prime Minister Marape expressed his desire for Papua New Guinea to continue living in harmony with its neighbors, while Prime Minister Albanese highlighted the shared history and sacrifices made by both countries during times of conflict. The visit to Isurava served as a powerful reminder of the enduring friendship and support between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
