Witnessing Nature’s Grand Finale: The Spectacular Partial Solar Eclipse at Balboa Park

Having a Blast at Fleet Science Center Viewing of Partial Eclipse

On Monday morning, a large crowd gathered at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park to witness a 55%-60% partial eclipse. Despite not being plunged into total darkness, the crowd found the partial eclipse to be a spectacular sight.

At 11:11 a.m., the peak of the partial eclipse served as a reminder of our place in the universe. Guests at the center were provided with sun-safe glasses and gathered around the Bea Evenson Fountain to watch the celestial show unfold. Throughout the morning, amateur and professional astronomers offered visitors a glimpse of the sun through solar telescopes and conducted solar system demonstrations.

Despite some scattered clouds passing in front of the sun, the morning was mostly bright. Guests at the Fleet Science Center got creative with paper pinhole viewers and even used a Ritz cracker as a solar projector. For one visitor, the eclipse had a personal touch as she watched it through her late father’s eclipse glasses, bringing his spirit to the event.

Overall, Steve Snyder, CEO of Fleet Science Center reminded us all to take a break from day-to-day troubles and reminding ourselves how amazing
