In recent news, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported high levels of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in milk from infected cows. The exact duration of time the virus can remain active in milk is still uncertain, according to Wenqing Zhang, head of the global influenza program at WHO.

Experts have discovered very high concentrations of the virus in raw milk and are studying its longevity in liquid form. Ms. Zhang referenced a case in Texas, USA, where a person contracted bird flu after coming into contact with infected dairy cows earlier this month. This case marks only the second instance of A/H5N1 influenza in humans within the US, with the first involving a mammal infected with the virus.
