The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to enhance work zone safety through connected vehicle programs. With this funding, WYDOT will be able to directly communicate with drivers regarding work zone hazards using a Situation Data Exchange system developed in collaboration with engineering firm Trihydro Corp.
The system will help define work zones more clearly on WYDOT’s 511 traveler information tools, providing automated driving systems and drivers with better information to navigate safely through work zones across the nation. WYDOT Director Darin Westby stated, “The technology will give drivers a more transparent and accurate representation of what a specific work zone looks like on a given day.” Once implemented, the system will improve the safety of employees, contractors, and drivers in work zones.
This initiative aims to make work zones safer for everyone involved and increase awareness among drivers to reduce accidents and improve overall road safety. A total of 34 states received grants, which do not require matching funds and cover program development and implementation costs. This is an important step towards making our roads safer for all travelers, regardless of where they are located.
