Young Athletes Left in the Lurch as USATF Cancels Trip to Peru for U20 World Championships: Balancing Safety and Opportunity

USATF’s Decision to Opt Out of 2024 World U20 Championships in Peru is a Major Loss

The decision by USATF to cancel the trip to Peru for the 2024 U20 World Championships has been met with disappointment, as young athletes who were looking forward to competing on the world stage have had their opportunity taken away. While safety concerns and issues with competitive readiness were cited as reasons for the cancellation, it is important to consider the impact that this decision will have on these athletes.

Peru is considered a place where American travelers should take precautions, similar to countries like Sweden or the UK. While it may not have been ideal for some athletes to participate in an event held at the end of August, ultimately it should be up to each individual athlete and their coach to decide if they are prepared to participate. If there are concerns about competitive readiness, perhaps there are alternative solutions that could be explored. For example, athletes who are unable to compete could defer their spots to others on the list, rather than going down the order. This would allow those who are eager to participate still have the opportunity.

It is unusual for Team USA not to send any athletes to an international championship, and it’s disappointing that this decision affects young athletes disproportionately. However, it is important for USATF and other organizations involved in youth sports development to continue working together towards finding solutions that prioritize both safety and competitive opportunities for young athletes. By addressing these issues and finding solutions, we can hopefully mend relationships between USATF and Peru, as well as show support for the young athletes who were looking forward to competing.
