YouTube Supervised Accounts: Providing Parents with Control and Safety for Young Viewers

YouTube introduces a ‘view-only’ commenting feature for supervised minor accounts

YouTube is introducing new functionality for its supervised accounts, which will allow minors to view comments but not write them on the platform. This feature will be available for users aged 13-17 years old with the ‘Explore more’ and ‘Almost all YouTube’ parameters. YouTube recognizes the importance of comments in enhancing the user experience, but it also aims to create a safer environment for younger viewers by limiting their ability to write comments.

The YouTube Supervised Experience is a version of the platform managed by parents for children under 13 years old. It is different from YouTube Kids, a platform specifically designed for kids. With a monitored account, parents can configure content based on the child’s age and maturity. The configurations include ‘To explore’ for users aged 9 years old, ‘Explore more’ for 13-year-olds with a wider range of content, and ‘Almost all of YouTube’ for older teens with access to all videos on the platform. These accounts also have disabled features like live chats and comments.

YouTube aims to provide parents with greater control over their children’s exposure to content on the platform through these supervised accounts. By limiting young viewers’ ability to write comments, it hopes to create a safer and more controlled environment that allows them to benefit from valuable information provided by other users while minimizing potential risks associated with user-generated content.
