$36 Million Boost for Kansas Dairy Industry: New Facility to Double Size of Dairy Science Unit at KSU

Funding Secured for New KSU Dairy Science Facility

In a bid to drive innovation and research in the dairy industry in Kansas, Senator J.R. Claeys of Salina announced that $36 million in funding and bonding authority has been added to the state budget. This late addition aims to replace the Dairy Science Unit at Kansas State University, with the goal of helping the dairy industry in the state double in size. The new facility will be crucial for teaching students and conducting research using modern methods.

The current dairy facility at the university dates back to 1977 and, although it was modern at the time, it is no longer practical for teaching students and conducting research using outdated methods. The facility also supports other programs at the university, including large-animal veterinary programs. However, Kansas State University did not prioritize the replacement of the dairy facility in this legislative session, leaving leaders like Senator Claeys and Representative Ken Rahjes to lead the fight with the support of the Dairy Farmers of America, without official university backing.

Claeys emphasized the importance of innovation in Kansas agriculture, noting the upcoming opening of a major cheese factory in western Kansas and the benefit of adding dairy production to the state’s agriculture portfolio rather than outsourcing commodities. The new facility will provide a boost to local farmers by offering more advanced training and resources for milk production. With this funding, Kansas can become a leader in sustainable and efficient dairy production while supporting its farmers’ economic growth.
