Abortion Rights Activists Gathered Outside Supreme Court for Protection, Despite Loss of Roe v. Wade

Most Women in States with Abortion Bans Advocate for Legal Access

Abortion rights activists gathered outside the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. to rally for the protection of abortion rights. Despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, a majority of women still support legal access to the procedure, even in states where it is banned. In fact, a survey conducted by KFF revealed that two-thirds of women in states with gestational limits oppose a nationwide ban on the abortion pill.

The KFF survey included 1,316 adults from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., including the 14 states that have banned abortion and the 11 states with gestational limits. The results showed that a majority of women living in these areas believe that abortion should be legal all or most of the time. This poses a challenge for Republicans seeking to restrict abortion through ballot initiatives in upcoming elections. In Florida, voters will decide in November on whether abortion should be protected as a constitutional right, potentially overriding existing bans.

The KFF survey also revealed that two-thirds of women in states where abortion is banned oppose a national ban on mifepristone, an FDA-approved medication used to terminate pregnancies up to nine weeks after conception. This finding is consistent with past referendums that have shown strong support for reproductive freedom, even in conservative states. It highlights the importance of protecting women’s right to choose when it comes to their bodies and their healthcare decisions.

Overall, this survey shows that while there are efforts to restrict access to abortion, there remains strong support for reproductive freedom among American voters. It is crucial that policymakers listen to these voices and work towards creating policies that respect women’s rights and autonomy over their own bodies.
