Akira Toriyama’s Post-Apocalyptic Sand Land: A Fitting Tribute to a Legend

Honoring Akira Toriyama’s Legacy: The Final Video Game by ‘Sand Land’

“Sand Land,” a post-apocalyptic open-world game set in a world reminiscent of “Mad Max,” has been highly anticipated, especially considering its creator, Akira Toriyama, is the genius behind classics like “Dragon Ball” and “Dr. Slump.” However, Toriyama’s unexpected death in March added an extra layer of pressure to the game’s development. Despite this, ILCA and Bandai Namco have delivered a competent adaptation of the source material that showcases Toriyama’s brilliance and offers an entertaining vehicular combat system.

The story follows unconventional heroes led by Beelzebub, a prince of demons, Sheriff Rao, and Thief as they search for a hidden spring in the desert. The camaraderie among these characters drives the adventure while exploring themes such as prejudice, exploitation, and trauma with a core of optimism.

While this game is envisioned as a sequel by Toriyama, it stays true to his vision with the inclusion of Ann, a mechanic with a mysterious lineage. The robust vehicular combat system allows players to engage in battles using various vehicles each with unique abilities and designs reminiscent of Toriyama’s creations from “Dragon Ball.” Unfortunately, other game systems such as hand-to-hand combat and stealth aspects lack depth and variety in enemies and AI.

Despite its flaws, “Sand Land” offers an engaging experience with memorable characters and impactful storytelling. The open world though not fully fleshed out provides diverse activities and missions that complement the main story. Overall, this game serves as a testament to Toriyama’s storytelling prowess and his ability to create narratives that resonate deeply with players.
