Armand Duplantis Sets New Pole Vault World Record, Defeating Previous Mark

Sweden’s Armand Duplantis made history at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest by breaking his own pole vault world record on August 26, 2023. Known as “Mondo,” the athlete began his outdoor season with a spectacular performance, surpassing his previous record of 6.24 meters by just 1cm.

The reigning Olympic and two-time world champion, Duplantis cleared the bar at 6.24 meters on his first attempt, marking his eighth world record in the discipline. Each of his records has been achieved with a 1cm improvement since he first broke the world record in February 2020 in Torun, Poland.

Entering the competition at a height of 5.62m, Duplantis successfully cleared 5.82m and then set the new world record with a clearance of 6.00m. Speaking about his achievement, Duplantis expressed excitement about starting his season in China after retaining his world indoor title in Glasgow last month with a clearance of 6.10m.

American pole vaulter Sam Hendricks finished in second place with a best effort of 5.82m and praised Duplantis for his exceptional talent and hard work. Hendricks stated that he is confident that Duplantis will become the true champion everyone hopes he will be, despite being second to the world record holder this time around.
