Armenian Political Prisoner’s Son Raises Concerns over Father’s Condition in Solitary Confinement Amid Hunger Strike

Ruben Vardanyan’s Son Claims Conditions of Father’s Detention Became Stricter Following Hunger Strike

Davit Vardanyan, son of former Artsakh Minister of State Ruben Vardanyan, who is imprisoned in Azerbaijan, has expressed concern about his father’s condition after he began a hunger strike. In an interview with CNN, Davit shared that his father used to contact his mother weekly but has not reached out since starting the hunger strike. After two weeks of silence, he reached out to his sister and revealed that he is in solitary confinement and his imprisonment conditions have become stricter due to the hunger strike.

CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour asked Davit if his father’s life might be in danger, to which Davit responded that it is a possibility that cannot be ruled out. Amanpour pointed out Vardanyan’s close associations with the Russian president and his sanctions by Ukraine, raising the question of whether he could be targeted by individuals with political disagreements. While Davit did not directly answer Amanpour’s question, he emphasized that his father entered politics to support Armenians in Artsakh after they were left vulnerable and alone, risking his personal safety.
