Celebrating Glass Art Mastery: The 2024 Biennial Paperweight Convention in New England.

Gathering of World-Renowned Artists and Collectors in Warwick to Celebrate Glass Art Movement

The Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA) is hosting the upcoming 2024 Biennial Paperweight Convention in New England from May 15-18 at the Crowne Plaza. This event is not just for desk accessories, but a celebration of glass art. Glass art and paperweight enthusiasts, collectors, artists, and newcomers are invited to come together and appreciate the art, history, and legacy of glass making through demonstrations, a paperweight fair, and a documentary screening.

Eric Jump, vice president of the PCA board, emphasized that paperweights are often overlooked as displays of glass art mastery created by highly skilled artists. The organization’s roots are on the East Coast, making the return to New England for this year’s Paperweight Convention particularly special.

This year’s convention will feature commemorative paperweights inspired by the state of Rhode Island. Artists like William Manson Jr. and Clinton Smith have created limited-edition paperweights depicting flamework bouquets and the Rhode Island Greening apple respectively. These unique paperweights are available for purchase to support the artists and the PCA.

Attendees at the convention can expect displays and exhibits by various national and New England-based glass artists. On Friday May 17th there will be free glass making demonstrations open to the public at Blackstone River Glass. The following day on Saturday May 18th there will be a free documentary screening called “Paul J Stankard: Flower & Flame”. This will shed light on Stankard’s life and legacy. Additionally on Saturday May 18th there will be a Paperweight Fair where attendees can meet artists and view an extensive range of paperweights.
