Colts Extend Key Player Contracts, Positioning Themselves for Success in 2024 with Anthony Richardson’s Return

Colts Sign Pro Bowl DT DeForest Buckner to Two-Year Extension Worth $46M, Reports Say

The Indianapolis Colts are focusing on re-signing key players from their 2024 squad during the offseason, and they have just extended DeForest Buckner’s contract. The Colts made the announcement on Monday morning without revealing specific details about the extension. However, multiple reports indicate that Buckner will be paid $46 million to remain with the team for another two years, extending his contract through 2026.

DeForest Buckner, who is 30 years old and entering his ninth NFL season, was originally drafted seventh overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. Since joining the Colts in 2020 through a trade with the Niners, Buckner has been an integral part of the team’s defense. He has amassed impressive statistics over his career, including 166 solo tackles, 32.5 sacks, 42 tackles for loss, 87 QB hits, and six forced fumbles. Buckner has also been selected to three Pro Bowls.

The Colts have re-signed several other key players from the 2024 squad, bringing the total to 10. Despite finishing the previous season with a 9-8 record, head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard are optimistic about the team’s potential for the upcoming season, especially with the return of quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson missed most of last season due to a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery but is expected to be back in full strength for training camp in July.

By securing key players like Buckner, along with wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., cornerback Kenny Moore and others who bring continuity and chemistry to their roster; The Colts are positioning themselves for a successful 2024 campaign even if Richardson faces challenges upon his return to the field
