Consum Closes 2021 with Record Turnover, Emphasizing Competitiveness and Sustainability in the Spanish Retail Sector

In 2021, the Valencian cooperative Consum closed with a turnover of 4,388.7 million euros, representing a 13.6% increase from the previous year. The supermarket chain’s focus on competitiveness has led to increased customer loyalty and reduced energy costs. Despite challenges such as high inflation and rising production costs, Consum remains committed to providing competitive prices to maintain its market position.

Consum operates 933 supermarkets across six autonomous communities, including its own and Charter franchise locations. The cooperative employs 21,216 workers. Rodríguez emphasized the importance of purchasing from national suppliers, with 80% of fresh products sourced domestically. Additionally, Consum has made significant strides in energy sustainability, with 97.7% of its energy coming from renewable sources and initiatives such as installing photovoltaic panels in supermarkets.

Investment in innovation is also crucial to the success of Consum. In 2021, the cooperative invested 167 million euros in opening new supermarkets and renovating existing ones. The cooperative plans to continue this expansion strategy in 2024, aiming to open 50 new supermarkets and invest another 172 million euros in new projects. This investment will help maintain Consum’s position as a leader in the Spanish retail sector while also contributing to economic growth and job creation in local communities.
