Corporate Bond Market: A Surprising Rebound in the First Quarter of 2024

Corporate bond values surged in the first quarter of the year

The corporate bond market in the first 3 months of this year experienced a significant increase in transaction size, reaching VND 9,800 billion. This was an increase of nearly 50% compared to the same period in 2023, according to a report from the Ministry of Finance.

By March 22, a total of 20 businesses had issued bonds worth VND 16,100 billion, down by only 36% compared to the same period last year. Real estate businesses led in bond issuance during the first quarter of the year, accounting for more than 67%, followed closely by construction with nearly 11%.

On average for the first three months, the market reached VND 9,800 billion and saw an interest rate of about 10.57% per year. Over two-thirds of issued bonds were guaranteed by assets. The amount of bonds bought back before maturity was VND 17,600 billion, down by nearly 38% compared to the same period last year.

Despite challenges such as rising debt levels and declining issuance volumes in some sectors, corporate bond issuance remains positive overall and is expected to continue growing in line with government targets.
