Computer Science senior wins college award for academic engagement

Ryan Slocum, a Computer Science student at CU Boulder, has recently received the Academic Engagement Award from the College of Engineering and Applied Science. His dedication to various campus programs and opportunities, including the President’s Leadership Class and three internships, as well as his role as a Teaching Assistant, was recognized by his nominators. Slocum also spearheaded an initiative to map the leadership landscape at CU Boulder for the Center for Leadership, demonstrating his commitment to personal growth and excellence in execution.

His nominators praised Slocum for his fearless desire to learn, intellectual humility, and ability to maintain a balanced perspective and sustainable lifestyle. Winning the award was a great honor for Slocum, who feels proud to be recognized among an esteemed group of fellow award winners within the college. He attributes his success to the support of his parents, the guidance of his professors like Dr. Angela Thieman-Dino and Dr. Paul Diduch, and the friendships he has made in the President’s Leadership Class.

Reflecting on his time at CU Boulder, Slocum believes that one of the most important lessons he has learned is that trying new things can be both scary and challenging but ultimately rewarding for personal growth and self-improvement. Looking ahead, Slocum has set personal and professional goals for himself in both his personal life and career plans. Personally, he hopes to compete in a 100-mile ultramarathon while professionally pursuing a graduate degree in robotics with a focus on working on impactful projects that challenge him while making a difference in society.
