Diplomatic Relations Suspended: Ecuador and Mexico Dispute Over Arrest of Former Vice President Jorge Glas

Mexico cuts diplomatic ties with Ecuador following embassy raid and capture of former VP Jorge Glas

After Ecuadorian police forces entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, Mexico has suspended diplomatic relations with Ecuador. This came shortly after Mexico granted Glas political asylum. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called the police’s actions a violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty. He instructed the Mexican chancellor to issue a statement declaring the immediate suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

The Mexican Foreign Minister confirmed the resolution, citing the violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations as the reason for the suspension. Jorge Glas had been seeking refuge in the Mexican embassy in Ecuador since December 17, 2023. The police forcibly entered the embassy, breaking doors and patios, and physically assaulting diplomatic personnel stationed there. Glas was detained at the embassy and later transferred to a unit of the Prosecutor’s Office in Quito.

Glas was serving two sentences and faced further investigations in Ecuador before seeking asylum at the Mexican embassy. Tensions between Mexico and Ecuador have been strained for years, including when President López Obrador expelled Mexico’s ambassador to Quito due to controversial statements made about Ecuadorian elections. These tensions escalated following an intrusion by police into the Mexican embassy, prompting Mexico to sever diplomatic ties with Ecuador.

Analysts noted that diplomatic relations between Mexico and Ecuador were already at a low point prior to this incident. The expulsion of Mexico’s ambassador and President López Obrador’s comments on Ecuadorian elections had strained relations between them, but it was not enough to completely sever ties until now.

The exact circumstances surrounding why police intruded into the Mexican embassy are still unclear, but it is clear that tensions between these two countries will continue to be tense until they are resolved peacefully.

In conclusion, Mexico has suspended diplomatic relations with Ecuador after police forces entered their embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas, who had sought political asylum from his home country after facing charges there. The suspension came after López Obrador condemned it as a violation of international law and sovereignty of another country.

Mexico has always been a strong advocate for human rights and democracy worldwide, so suspending diplomatic relations with another country is never taken lightly by their government officials or citizens alike. It is hoped that both countries can come together soon to resolve any differences they may have and maintain good diplomatic relations once again.
