Will Smith has signed a $140 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which adds to the team’s total spending of nearly $1.4 billion for five key players since December. This new deal supersedes the previous $8.85 million, one-year agreement that was reached earlier in January.
Smith had a strong start to the week, going 5 for 10 with two RBIs as the Dodgers split a two-game series against San Diego in Seoul, South Korea. The 28-year-old was named an All-Star for the first time last year, posting a .261 batting average with 19 home runs and 76 RBIs. Throughout his six seasons with the Dodgers, Smith holds a .263 average with 91 home runs and 308 RBIs, making him a valuable asset to the team.
Had he not agreed to this extension, Smith would have become eligible for free agency after the 2025 season. The Dodgers have now committed a total of $1,365,687,500 to key players including two-way star Shohei Ohtani ($700 million for 10 years), right-handers Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($325 million for 12 years) and Tyler Glasnow ($136,562,500 for five years), outfielder Teoscar Hernández ($23.5 million for one year), and now Will Smith.
