Dr. Terence Hicks: An Outstanding Scholar in the Social Science Discipline Honored with Prestigious Award

Professor from East Tennessee State University Receives Award for Social Science Scholarship

Dr. Terence Hicks was honored with the Virginia Social Science Association Scholar Award, a prestigious recognition for outstanding scholars in the social science discipline. He expressed his gratitude for receiving this award during the association’s 97th annual conference on April 20.

As a tenured full professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at East Tennessee State University, Hicks has also served as a dean for the Clemmer College of Education and Human Development. With a wealth of experience and expertise, Hicks is an award-winning author with 10 published books and over 100 combined research publications and presentations.

Hicks specializes in research on first-generation college students, college student self-efficacy, STEM education, college retention, school closing and massive resistance, high school to college transition, spirituality among college students, and psychological well-being of students and administrators in higher education. He has presented academic papers both nationally and internationally on these topics.

In addition to his teaching and research roles, Hicks has also served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Southern Regional Education Board and as a Research Fellow for the National Institutes of Health, National Center of Minority Health and Health Disparities. With a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in counseling education from Virginia State University, Hicks also holds a Doctorate in Education degree in educational leadership from Wilmington University, Delaware, and a Ph.D. in counseling and counselor education and higher education from North Carolina State University.
