On April 27, Sakhalin human rights activist Mark Cooperman, who is 85 years old, had his home searched by police officers. The search was conducted in relation to a case of “calls for extremism” under Part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. According to reports from OVD-Info, the reason for initiating the criminal case was a telegram mailing. Investigators claim that Cooperman allegedly sent a document titled “Plan for Western participation in regime change in Russia. Humanitarian occupation” to an unidentified group of people. However, Cooperman denies ever seeing or sending such a document. During the search, all electronic devices found in Cooperman’s house were seized by the security forces.

Initially considered a suspect, Cooperman was charged on the afternoon of April 28. Due to his disability and inability to walk, he was not brought in for questioning. All of them, except Cooperman, are involved in the case as witnesses.
