Elon Musk’s Unannounced Visit to Beijing: Seeking Permission for Self-Driving Software and Full Autonomy in China

Elon Musk travels to China to discuss self-driving technology (NASDAQ:TSLA)

Elon Musk arrived in Beijing for an unannounced visit on Sunday. During his visit, the chief executive of Tesla, an electric-car maker, is expected to meet with government officials to discuss the introduction of self-driving software and seek permission to move data outside of China. According to Reuters, a person familiar with the matter reported these plans.

Premier Li Qiang in Beijing expressed to Musk that Tesla’s growth in China could be seen as a successful example of economic and trade cooperation with the United States, as reported by Chinese state media. The introduction of Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in China would be a significant step for Tesla as it competes with local electric car manufacturers. Despite introducing the most autonomous version of Autopilot technology four years ago, Tesla has not yet brought it to China. The discussions between Musk and government officials are aimed at potentially changing that.
