Empowering Local Businesses to Improve Food Access through the Healthy Retail Access Program

The Healthy Retail Access Program: City Resources for Small Businesses in Economic Development

The Office of Business Resources, a division of the City of Madison’s Economic Development, is showcasing the programs and resources it offers in honor of National Small Business Week. One such program is the Healthy Retail Access Program which provides funding to businesses that work to increase access to affordable, healthy, and culturally appropriate food. Funds can be used for various purposes including new services, equipment, building improvements or programs in areas identified on the City’s Food Access Improvement Map.

In 2021, Bombay Bazaar, a grocer located on S. Gammon Road offering a variety of food items from India and Southeast Asia, participated in the Healthy Retail Access Program and received over $98,000 in funding. For the 2024 operating budget, the City has allocated $250,000 for Healthy Retail Access Program projects which includes capital and infrastructure grants, technical assistance, data collection initiatives and evaluations.

Eligible retailers or organizations working to improve food access are encouraged to apply for funding through this program. More information about the program and eligibility can be found on the City’s Healthy Retail Access Program page. By targeting areas in need and investing strategically, this program aims to have a positive impact on the community while supporting businesses providing healthy food options.
