Europe Takes on Apple: iPadOS Mandated to Comply with Digital Markets Law for Fair Competition

European Union calls for Apple to open iPadOS for parallel download and delete pre-installed apps

The European Commission has mandated changes to Apple’s iPad operating system (iPadOS) to comply with its Digital Markets Law. This law aims to foster fair competition in the market by designating iPadOS as an “access gatekeeper,” similar to the iPhone operating system (iOS), Safari browser, and App Store.

Following a six-month investigation that began in September, the European Commission determined that iPadOS is crucial for professional users to reach end-users. As a result, Apple has been given until March 2023 to adapt iPadOS to meet the requirements of the Digital Markets Law.

As part of these changes, Apple must make it easier for users to uninstall pre-installed applications on iPad devices, which are typically from Apple. Additionally, iPadOS will need to support the downloading and installation of applications from sources other than the App Store.

These changes are expected to enhance competition in the market and promote user choice and flexibility in the use of iPad devices. Users will have more control over the applications they use and where they download them from, ultimately leading to a more open and competitive digital ecosystem.
