Fighting for Justice: Debanhi Escobar’s Parents Continue to Advocate for Transparency in Missing Persons Investigations

Two years after the feminicide of the young Mexican, Debanhi Escobar, impunity still prevails.

Debanhi Escobar’s parents, Mario Escobar and Dolores Bazaldúa, have been fighting for two years to bring justice to their daughter who disappeared and was later found dead in a cistern in Nuevo León, Mexico. The investigation into her disappearance was taken on by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR), but the parents feel that authorities have not done enough to bring those responsible to justice.

The case gained international attention and highlighted the issue of violence against women in Mexico. Despite promises from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to help resolve the case, the parents feel that progress has been slow. As López Obrador’s term approaches, they fear that attention to their daughter’s case is waning. They have been advocating for new information to be added to the case file so that responsibilities can be defined and those accountable for Debanhi’s disappearance and murder can be held accountable.

The Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office has been criticized by the parents for corruption and incompetence. They have called for a thorough investigation into the events surrounding Debanhi’s disappearance and murder, with those responsible being brought to justice. Meanwhile, Debanhi’s father, Escobar, has become a candidate for federal deputy and is pushing for legislation to address disappearances and feminicides in Mexico.

Despite facing challenges and frustrations, Debanhi’s parents remain determined to seek justice for their daughter and prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy. Their fight continues as they advocate for transparency in investigations into cases involving missing persons.
