Fraudulent Doctor Sentenced for Defrauding Amtrak Employees’ Health Insurance: A Cautionary Tale

New Jersey doctor receives prison sentence for defrauding Amtrak health care provider

In May 2023, a New Jersey doctor named Muhammad Mirza was sentenced to 26 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme to defraud Amtrak employees’ health insurance for unnecessary medical services and bribing the employees. The U.S. Attorney, Philip R. Sellinger, announced Mirza’s sentence on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

Between April 2017 and June 2022, Mirza and other conspirators conspired to bill Amtrak’s employee health care plan for services that were either never provided or medically unnecessary. They allegedly paid Amtrak employees to use their health insurance billing information to submit false claims, resulting in losses of over $1.3 million for Amtrak.

Mirza operated medical offices in New Jersey, New York, and other states, as stated in court documents. Despite the allegations, his attorney did not respond to requests for comment at the time. In addition to his prison sentence, Mirza was ordered to pay $1.37 million in restitution and serve two years of supervised release.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in healthcare practices and the potential consequences of engaging in fraudulent activities like this one. It is important for medical professionals to adhere strictly to ethical standards when treating patients and billing their insurance companies fairly and accurately.
