Epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina’s passion for public health began four years ago when she was tasked with sending daily email updates to staff, faculty, and students at the University of Texas. However, her newsletter quickly evolved beyond COVID-19 updates to cover a range of public health topics, including mental health and gun violence.

Jetelina’s dedication to educating the public is evident in her efforts to make complex scientific information accessible to a wider audience. She recently left her position at UT to work as a scientific-communications consultant for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where she continues to use her expertise to raise awareness about important public health issues.

In addition to her work with the CDC, Jetelina has also started a nonprofit organization called Public Health Unseen that aims to support and expand the work of scientists who are dedicated to educating the public about important health issues. She believes that many scientists go unnoticed and underappreciated for their contributions to public health, and she wants to change that by making their work more visible.

Jetelina’s goal is not just to educate the public about specific health issues but also empower them with the knowledge and resources they need to take action in their own lives. Through her newsletter and nonprofit organization, she hopes to inspire more scientists
