From Malls to Modern Business Parks: The Transformation of Akron’s Former Chapel Hill Mall

Examining Ohio’s Chapel Hill Business Park through its square footage

The former Chapel Hill Mall, located in Akron on the corner of Brittain Road, Buchholzer Boulevard, Howe and Independence avenues, has undergone a major transformation into a business park. Now owned by Industrial Commercial Properties (ICP) and Storage of America, the complex spans 900,000 square feet and has been redeveloped into a modern industrial and commercial space.

ICP currently owns a majority of the complex at 2000 Brittain Road, which consists of 715,000 square feet spread over 60 acres of land. Storage of America has also acquired a portion of the former mall, with a building spanning 169,000 square feet that was formerly occupied by Macy’s. Additionally, Storage of America owns 8 acres of land within the business park.

With approximately 40,826 square feet of space available for lease in the business park, four new businesses have already moved in since the mall closed in 2021. Storage of America had already purchased the former Macy’s building in 2019, laying the groundwork for the redevelopment of the former Chapel Hill Mall into a vibrant business park.
