Hue Central Hospital Sets Three Records in 48-hour Organ Transplantation

Hue Central Hospital breaks 3 organ transplantation records

On April 5, Hue Central Hospital announced that they had achieved three records for organ transplantation within 48 hours. The hospital successfully completed surgeries on eight patients during the period from April 2 to April 4.

Professor Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, the hospital’s Director, made the announcement, stating that among these cases, Hue Central Hospital received a set of heart, liver, and kidney organs simultaneously from a brain-dead patient at Vietnam – Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. This was the first time the hospital received multiple organs in a single donation. Additionally, the hospital set a record for the longest organ transport time as the organs had to travel over 800 km from Quang Ninh to Hue, taking more than four hours and thirty minutes to reach the hospital.

Professor Hiep described the journey of a cross-Vietnam organ transplant from a brain-dead donor as “a magical mission” that showcases determination to save lives. In recent years, Hue Central Hospital has successfully transplanted twenty-three organs in two weeks, including hearts, livers, and kidneys. These achievements contribute significantly to Vietnam’s efforts in organ transplantation. Since 1992, there have been eight thousand three hundred and sixty-five cases recorded in Vietnam.

Despite the potential for organ donation from brain-dead individuals, only six percent of organs come from living donors in Vietnam. Experts suggest that the country is missing out on organ donations from approximately seven thousand people who die in traffic accidents each year. Organ transplantation plays an essential role in saving lives and improving healthcare in Vietnam.
