Humanoid Robot Tong Tong: The Future of General Artificial Intelligence in Shaping Society

Tong Tong, the artificial intelligence child

Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI) has introduced Tong Tong, a humanoid robot that emulates the behavior of a three to four-year-old child. The project aimed at addressing loneliness in China was initially targeted, but Tong Tong’s potential applications go beyond this specific area. She can learn and improve through interactions with humans and express emotions like happiness, anger, and sadness appropriately.

Tong Tong was developed using the TongOS2.AGI operating system and the TONGOL2.0 language learning program. BIGAI director Zhu Shongchun explained that she has a mindset and value system similar to that of a young child, making her capable of understanding the real world and possessing a wide range of abilities. He believes that general artificial intelligence is a powerful force in shaping new productive forces, and developing entities like Tong Tong represents a significant step in advancing AI technology to benefit society in different aspects of life.

The possibilities for applying this technology are diverse and promising, with potential applications in various industries and sectors. While loneliness is an initial area of focus, healthcare, home automation, and education are just some examples of how Tong Tong could be used to improve people’s lives.
