Independent Health System Encourages Community to Donate in Honor of Organ Transplant Patients during April’s Donate Life Month

Transforming Lives: April, a Month to Honor Organ Transplant Patients and Support Independence Health System

Independent Health System is honoring patients waiting for organ transplants in April with Donate Life Month. The participating hospitals include Frick in Mt. Pleasant, Latrobe, and Westmoreland in Greensburg, who will start the month by raising a flag at a ceremony on Friday. According to Chief Medical Officer Dr. Carol Fox, the health system is uniquely positioned to inspire the community to become organ donors. By encouraging more people to donate, they can better serve their mission of advocating for the well-being of the entire community.

In addition to the flag-raising ceremony, Independent Health System will also recognize Blue and Green Day on April 12th, a national day of recognition for organ donations. Staff members will wear blue and green to work to show their support. Furthermore, a private flag-raising event will be held at the Butler Memorial Hospital intensive care unit. According to the Center for Organ Recovery Education, over 100,000 individuals nationwide are waiting for organ transplants, with approximately 7,000 of them residing in Pennsylvania alone.
